The
Professor Googol Flying Time Machine and Atomic Space Capsule
Math Primer (L, S), Sam Valenza, Jr. Westmont, N. J.:
Intergalactic Publishing, 1973, vi + 144 pp.
This little paperback is a cartoon
development of numbers from the counting numbers through the
"real numbers corporation." The book is in nine
chapters, one of which is devoted to "two special characters
- Zero and One. The presentation throughout is thorough and
entertaining. There is a good deal of concealed drill, of hammering
home the meanings of numbers and of order.
I believe that every middle, junior
high, and senior high school teacher who has students who resist
learning mathematics should have a copy of this book available to
students. Incidentally, read it yourself; there is a wealth of
ideas for teaching numbers and order.‑MUNRO.
